is a budget telephoto lens usually sold<\/p>\n
new for 350.<\/p>\n
i bought this example for 75 from a<\/p>\n
local camera store and<\/p>\n
this cheap telephoto lens is not known<\/p>\n
to have the best image quality<\/p>\n
but i think it is a good price or good<\/p>\n
value<\/p>\n
telephoto lens for someone who’s wanting<\/p>\n
to try out their first<\/p>\n
telephoto lens like myself and<\/p>\n
sony sells this as one of the kit lenses<\/p>\n
for their aps-c cameras and i<\/p>\n
really do think this is the best value<\/p>\n
telephoto e-mount lens<\/p>\n
let’s go see why i think that is<\/p>\n

and the first positive i’ll talk about<\/p>\n
for this lens is the price<\/p>\n
and yes the sony 70 to 350g<\/p>\n
lens is an upgrade in every single way<\/p>\n
it’s got a sharper image quality<\/p>\n
and it’s able to reach almost double<\/p>\n
the focal length and also it is weather<\/p>\n
sealed<\/p>\n
but for us non-professionals<\/p>\n
900 is a lot of money for a lens no it’s<\/p>\n
not it’s actually a bargain<\/p>\n
at 900 i mean the sony 100 to 400 gm<\/p>\n
lens that’s<\/p>\n
2500 so 900 that’s<\/p>\n
that’s basically free<\/p>\n
so for us non-professionals the 55 to<\/p>\n
210 at<\/p>\n
a third of the price is an attractive<\/p>\n
choice and<\/p>\n
i know that the price of a new lens for<\/p>\n
this<\/p>\n
is about 350 dollars but you can easily<\/p>\n
find<\/p>\n
lenses for about 100 or less<\/p>\n
in the used market and there are three<\/p>\n
reasons why<\/p>\n
first is that sony sold a lot of these<\/p>\n
lenses as a part of the kit lens along<\/p>\n
with the<\/p>\n
sony 16 to 50 kit lens and secondly<\/p>\n
the lens has a bad reputation for having<\/p>\n
poor image quality so the price goes<\/p>\n
down quickly<\/p>\n
and it’s an old lens so it first came<\/p>\n
out in 2011<\/p>\n
so it’s all technology as i mentioned<\/p>\n
earlier i got this example for 75<\/p>\n
dollars from my local camera store<\/p>\n
that’s vintage lens price for a native<\/p>\n
e-mount lens that’s gonna<\/p>\n
auto focus and has stabilization built<\/p>\n
in<\/p>\n
i personally don’t use my telephoto<\/p>\n
lenses or telephoto field of view that<\/p>\n
often<\/p>\n
so spending nine hundred dollars for<\/p>\n
something i wasn’t going to use that<\/p>\n
often<\/p>\n
wasn’t the smartest choice but for 75<\/p>\n
dollars i’m really happy to have this<\/p>\n
lens in my camera bag<\/p>\n
that’s going to go twice as far as my<\/p>\n
sony 18 to 105 which is<\/p>\n
my longest reaching lens before i bought<\/p>\n
this lens<\/p>\n
and the second positive i’ll talk about<\/p>\n
is it’s lightweight<\/p>\n
and it’s small size and the compactness<\/p>\n
of the sony aps-c system is definitely<\/p>\n
one of its biggest strengths and<\/p>\n
the 55 to 210 is a small and light<\/p>\n
telephoto lens<\/p>\n
it’s only about 64 by 108 millimeters<\/p>\n
which is a lot lighter compared to very<\/p>\n
large full-frame telephoto lenses like<\/p>\n
the<\/p>\n
fv70 to 300g lens which is 84 by 144<\/p>\n
millimeters<\/p>\n
and even compared to the 70 to 350g lens<\/p>\n
that’s meant for aps-c<\/p>\n
it’s a lot smaller because it’s about<\/p>\n
77-142 millimeters<\/p>\n
and also weighs only about 345 grams<\/p>\n
which is a lot lighter than the 70 to<\/p>\n
350 g lens which is<\/p>\n
almost double at 625 grams<\/p>\n
or the fv to 70 to 300 g lens which is<\/p>\n
854 grams yes the g lenses are going to<\/p>\n
be superior in every<\/p>\n
way possible but this 55 to 210 is the<\/p>\n
only affordable<\/p>\n
zoom telephoto lens so the only<\/p>\n
comparison that you could compare it to<\/p>\n
it would be those g lenses and this is<\/p>\n
much lighter and<\/p>\n
much smaller than those two lenses and<\/p>\n
even if you look at the super zoom<\/p>\n
lenses like the 18 to 200<\/p>\n
this is still going to be cheaper<\/p>\n
lighter and<\/p>\n
better in terms of value and the third<\/p>\n
positive is the<\/p>\n
stabilization and stabilization is key<\/p>\n
in video making shaky footage makes<\/p>\n
people want to stop watching<\/p>\n
and buttery smooth gimbal dog videos<\/p>\n
make people happy<\/p>\n
despite being a cheap kit lens the 55 to<\/p>\n
210 has<\/p>\n
lens stabilization or sony’s optical<\/p>\n
steady shot<\/p>\n
and since most sony aps-c cameras do not<\/p>\n
have in-body stabilization<\/p>\n
the lens stabilization is a must and<\/p>\n
these hand jitters<\/p>\n
and shakes become more prominent at<\/p>\n
telephoto angles<\/p>\n
so the 55 to 210 optical steady shot<\/p>\n
makes a huge difference when making<\/p>\n
videos handheld as you can see the<\/p>\n
difference between the oss<\/p>\n
on and the oss off for<\/p>\n
55 to 210 is pretty noticeable even to<\/p>\n
a non-professional like me so now on to<\/p>\n
some negatives and the first negative<\/p>\n
would be that image quality<\/p>\n
and as one of the kit lenses available<\/p>\n
for these only aps-c cameras<\/p>\n
the 55 to 210 doesn’t have the sharpest<\/p>\n
image quality in my non-professional<\/p>\n
opinion<\/p>\n
i don’t think i would spot a world’s<\/p>\n
difference if i view the 4k videos of<\/p>\n
the 55 to 210<\/p>\n
versus the 4k videos of 18 to 105 g lens<\/p>\n
on a smartphone screen but on a tv<\/p>\n
screen or a computer monitor screen the<\/p>\n
18 to 1005g<\/p>\n
lens produces a sharper and more<\/p>\n
pleasing looking image<\/p>\n
and this is the main reason why i<\/p>\n
haven’t used the 55 to 210<\/p>\n
much since i bought the 55 to 210 the<\/p>\n
182 105 has enough zoom range for me<\/p>\n
and has superior image quality with one<\/p>\n
of the best<\/p>\n
lens stabilization in the email world<\/p>\n
compared to<\/p>\n
a 50 millimeter f 1.4 prime lens the<\/p>\n
sharpness is a world’s difference the 55<\/p>\n
to 210 still will create more than<\/p>\n
usable 4k videos for youtube and on<\/p>\n
professional videos<\/p>\n
and it’s not like the 4k videos are<\/p>\n
gonna hurt your eyes<\/p>\n
in any way but because of its softer<\/p>\n
image i find myself<\/p>\n
gravitating towards other lenses more<\/p>\n
often than this one<\/p>\n
the second negative of this lens is its<\/p>\n
aperture and the 55 to 210<\/p>\n
is a darker lens with the aperture of<\/p>\n
4.5 to 6.3<\/p>\n
but it’s not alone because most<\/p>\n
telephoto lenses have<\/p>\n
high aperture like the 70 to 350g lens<\/p>\n
is also<\/p>\n
f 4.5 to 6.3 so<\/p>\n
at the max aperture of f 4.5 at 55<\/p>\n
millimeters and<\/p>\n
f 6.3 at 210 millimeters it doesn’t make<\/p>\n
this lens a great low light lens<\/p>\n
compared to a 50 millimeter f 1.4<\/p>\n
vintage lens the<\/p>\n
f 4.5 at 55 millimeter has noticeably<\/p>\n
more grain and it’s just not the quality<\/p>\n
that you expect from a bigger sensored<\/p>\n
camera but<\/p>\n
as long as there is enough light i like<\/p>\n
the bokeh you get out of this lens at<\/p>\n
210 millimeters it’s<\/p>\n
just not a lens you’ll bring out to the<\/p>\n
late night bird videos or<\/p>\n
low light indoor events and the third<\/p>\n
negative of this lens will be<\/p>\n
the build quality and i’m not an<\/p>\n
engineer but<\/p>\n
it does look likes only fuse two lenses<\/p>\n
to make a telephoto lens<\/p>\n
and it doesn’t have a zoom lock so you<\/p>\n
can push it out but you can also push it<\/p>\n
in very easily<\/p>\n
and considering it’s only a hundred<\/p>\n
dollars i<\/p>\n
really can’t complain but you can tell<\/p>\n
that this isn’t<\/p>\n
the most high quality or high priced<\/p>\n
lens so in conclusion the sony 55 to 210<\/p>\n
is a great budget telephoto lens for<\/p>\n
youtube videos<\/p>\n
there really isn’t an alternative for<\/p>\n
sony aps-c users looking to<\/p>\n
add a little bit more reach without<\/p>\n
spending 900<\/p>\n
or more and yes it’s not the sharpest<\/p>\n
not the brightest and not the most<\/p>\n
sturdiest but<\/p>\n
it’s a lens you can buy for less than a<\/p>\n
hundred dollars<\/p>\n
and it’s definitely not my most used<\/p>\n
lens it’s probably my least used lens<\/p>\n
but i’m happy to have it because<\/p>\n
of its low price and it the special<\/p>\n
purpose that it serves<\/p>\n
and i think the 16 to 50<\/p>\n
along with the 55 to 210 the kit lens<\/p>\n
combo<\/p>\n
could be all you need for most<\/p>\n
situations<\/p>\n
and i should probably compare the 16 to<\/p>\n
50 plus the 55 to 210 combo<\/p>\n
versus the 18 to 105 single<\/p>\n
lens setup to see which is the better<\/p>\n
setup<\/p>\n
but what do you guys think about the<\/p>\n
sony 55 to 210<\/p>\n
is it worth buying or should people stay<\/p>\n
away from it<\/p>\n
i think you should buy it especially if<\/p>\n
you can buy for less than a hundred<\/p>\n
