little bit different we&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>not reviewing a study or or a group of<\/p>\n<p>studies or anything like that we&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>talking about a product this week now I<\/p>\n<p>know this product has been popping up in<\/p>\n<p>a lot of your social media feeds because<\/p>\n<p>you guys send it to me and you must<\/p>\n<p>think it&#x2019;s BS castella you&#x2019;re like hey<\/p>\n<p>do you bunk this first off I never like<\/p>\n<p>to like set out to just debunk something<\/p>\n<p>I like to make sure that like whatever<\/p>\n<p>I&#x2019;m looking at you know does it have<\/p>\n<p>validity or not before I just go<\/p>\n<p>attacking because that&#x2019;s a very<\/p>\n<p>dangerous mindset to get into and the<\/p>\n<p>products actually been popping up in my<\/p>\n<p>social media feed as well it&#x2019;s called<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthnutritiontips.com\/zh\/go\/lumen\/\" 1094 rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">lumen<\/a> the claims I saw initially were<\/p>\n<p>that basically find out what fuel your<\/p>\n<p>body is using right now and it can it&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>kind of triggering triggering word for<\/p>\n<p>me but heck your metabolism to know<\/p>\n<p>whether or not you&#x2019;re burning carbs or<\/p>\n<p>fats well I figured pretty early on it<\/p>\n<p>must be using an R er or respite or E<\/p>\n<p>exchange ratio R er refers to the amount<\/p>\n<p>of co2 produced by metabolism versus how<\/p>\n<p>much oxygen is being used by metabolism<\/p>\n<p>basically the way you do this is you<\/p>\n<p>breathe into something and it measures<\/p>\n<p>like what gases are being expelled from<\/p>\n<p>your body versus what&#x2019;s in the room and<\/p>\n<p>essentially it can tell you based on<\/p>\n<p>that ratio whether or not you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>predominantly burning carbohydrates or<\/p>\n<p>fats or a mix of both so an re R of 1<\/p>\n<p>for example means you&#x2019;re almost<\/p>\n<p>exclusively burning carbohydrate and re<\/p>\n<p>are of 0.7 is nearly exclusively fat and<\/p>\n<p>anything in between there is a mix I did<\/p>\n<p>see a video and apparently there&#x2019;s an<\/p>\n<p>app that goes along with this I don&#x2019;t<\/p>\n<p>know if the device has been validated<\/p>\n<p>but if it&#x2019;s been validated re R is a<\/p>\n<p>completely reasonable measure it does<\/p>\n<p>measure what fuel you&#x2019;re utilizing now<\/p>\n<p>before you go out and buy one wait till<\/p>\n<p>the end of the video because I&#x2019;m going<\/p>\n<p>to explain why fuel being utilized is<\/p>\n<p>not the same thing as fat loss or fat<\/p>\n<p>gain the app is also giving you<\/p>\n<p>nutritional and workout instruction<\/p>\n<p>based on what your AR AR is and some of<\/p>\n<p>the screens I saw and I don&#x2019;t know how<\/p>\n<p>the backend works or anything like that<\/p>\n<p>so I can only make opinions based off<\/p>\n<p>what I&#x2019;ve seen but some of the screens I<\/p>\n<p>saw were for example you&#x2019;re doing great<\/p>\n<p>looks like you&#x2019;re burning a lot of fat<\/p>\n<p>have a high carb day today and then<\/p>\n<p>when hey looks like you&#x2019;re burning too<\/p>\n<p>many carbs let&#x2019;s have a low carb day<\/p>\n<p>today and that sort of thing which hey<\/p>\n<p>that seems reasonable but you have to<\/p>\n<p>understand fuel being oxidized is not<\/p>\n<p>the same thing as fat loss so for<\/p>\n<p>example just because you&#x2019;re burning a<\/p>\n<p>lot of fat doesn&#x2019;t mean you&#x2019;re losing a<\/p>\n<p>lot of fat fat loss or gain is<\/p>\n<p>determined by the equation of fat<\/p>\n<p>balance equals fat stored minus fat<\/p>\n<p>burned or fat oxidized now if you eating<\/p>\n<p>really high fat very low carb diet you<\/p>\n<p>will burn a lot of fat you also store a<\/p>\n<p>lot of fat because the body doesn&#x2019;t<\/p>\n<p>really store carbohydrate as fat there&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>been several studies on overfeeding<\/p>\n<p>showing that basically of the fat you<\/p>\n<p>store approximately 98% of it to 99% of<\/p>\n<p>it is from dietary fat only one to two<\/p>\n<p>percent of the fat you store in your fat<\/p>\n<p>cells is from carbohydrate so carbs<\/p>\n<p>aren&#x2019;t really stored as fat it&#x2019;s mostly<\/p>\n<p>dietary fat stored as fat so if you eat<\/p>\n<p>a lot of dietary fat and low<\/p>\n<p>carbohydrate you&#x2019;ll burn a lot of<\/p>\n<p>dietary fat but you&#x2019;ll also store a lot<\/p>\n<p>of dietary fat so whether or not you<\/p>\n<p>lose fat or gain fat will be determined<\/p>\n<p>by your energy balance not how much fat<\/p>\n<p>you&#x2019;re burning now if you&#x2019;re eating a<\/p>\n<p>high carb diet for example you won&#x2019;t<\/p>\n<p>burn very much fat but you also won&#x2019;t<\/p>\n<p>store very much fat<\/p>\n<p>once again the balance of fat loss or<\/p>\n<p>fat gain will be determined by your<\/p>\n<p>energy balance which is how many<\/p>\n<p>calories are you taking in vs. how many<\/p>\n<p>you&#x2019;re expending this device isn&#x2019;t<\/p>\n<p>telling you how many calories you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>expending it&#x2019;s just telling you what<\/p>\n<p>your body&#x2019;s preferred fuel source is and<\/p>\n<p>that can also be deceiving in of itself<\/p>\n<p>for example you cannot change your diet<\/p>\n<p>at all but if you start doing really<\/p>\n<p>really high-intensity exercise you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>RER will go up you&#x2019;ll be using much more<\/p>\n<p>carbohydrate but that doesn&#x2019;t mean that<\/p>\n<p>you&#x2019;re not losing fat it just means that<\/p>\n<p>that fuel at that particular time is<\/p>\n<p>predominantly carbohydrate now what<\/p>\n<p>we&#x2019;ve seen in exercise studies is that<\/p>\n<p>if you burn a lot of carbohydrate during<\/p>\n<p>your workout you end up burning more fat<\/p>\n<p>throughout the rest of the day if you<\/p>\n<p>end up burning a lot of fat during your<\/p>\n<p>workout you burn more<\/p>\n<p>bow hydrate throughout the rest of the<\/p>\n<p>day okay your body balance is this very<\/p>\n<p>well so the problem that I could foresee<\/p>\n<p>is if this app is using how much fat<\/p>\n<p>you&#x2019;re burning is kind of being<\/p>\n<p>indicative of whether or not you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>losing fat and telling you hey you need<\/p>\n<p>to have a high carb day today because<\/p>\n<p>you&#x2019;ve been burning a lot of fat you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>doing a great job well if you then have<\/p>\n<p>a high carb day guess what&#x2019;s gonna<\/p>\n<p>happen to your RER it&#x2019;s gonna go up and<\/p>\n<p>now it&#x2019;s gonna tell you you&#x2019;re burning a<\/p>\n<p>lot of carbs so guess what&#x2019;s gonna<\/p>\n<p>happen the next day it&#x2019;s gonna tell you<\/p>\n<p>to have a low carb day and you&#x2019;re gonna<\/p>\n<p>oscillate back and forth like that and<\/p>\n<p>it&#x2019;s giving no consideration to what<\/p>\n<p>your energy balance is now I don&#x2019;t know<\/p>\n<p>if there&#x2019;s like a calorie tracker in the<\/p>\n<p>app or anything like that that could be<\/p>\n<p>there that could be something but if<\/p>\n<p>it&#x2019;s only operating off of RER it&#x2019;s not<\/p>\n<p>really giving you useable data in so far<\/p>\n<p>as body composition now maybe you&#x2019;re an<\/p>\n<p>athlete I would argue then that there&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>still limited data than it provides but<\/p>\n<p>maybe you just really care about what<\/p>\n<p>your fuel selection is I personally<\/p>\n<p>don&#x2019;t because again at the end of the<\/p>\n<p>day it&#x2019;s gonna boil down to energy<\/p>\n<p>balance and how many calories you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>consuming versus your energy expenditure<\/p>\n<p>based on your BMR and meet TEF and your<\/p>\n<p>exercise energy expenditure so I think<\/p>\n<p>the tool itself may be reliable I think<\/p>\n<p>making determinations on your diet based<\/p>\n<p>on the fuel that your body is using at<\/p>\n<p>the time it&#x2019;s probably very unreliable<\/p>\n<p>in terms of trying to get yourself<\/p>\n<p>consistent results that&#x2019;s my take on it<\/p>\n<p>personally I&#x2019;m not gonna buy it and I&#x2019;m<\/p>\n<p>not gonna recommend my clients buy it<\/p>\n<p>and I don&#x2019;t really know what data that&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>really helpful for body composition it&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>going to provide but if you really care<\/p>\n<p>about whether or not you&#x2019;re burning<\/p>\n<p>carbohydrate or oxidizing fat in<\/p>\n<p>regardless of whether or not you&#x2019;re<\/p>\n<p>gaining or losing fat then maybe it&#x2019;s<\/p>\n<p>helpful alright guys hope you
